Do you have any additional comments about the Timberline Trail? (highlights, tips)
61 submission
Wanted to note that we had snow bridges across the Coe and Clark rivers so my report may not be reliable as it melts. We also kept our phones on airplane mode majority of the trip so can't speak 100% to the reception on trail!

My group met you at Cloud Cap! We enjoyed your company and encouragement in our journey 🙂
We stayed at Cloud Cap and Timberline Lodge, so no camping.
Timberline Lodge buffet at the end was so delicious! Use crocs or lightweight water shoes for water crossings. Take your time when finding your way across creeks and look for rock cairns.
A bit of difficulty getting from trail down to river at Eliot Crossing (going CW), sandy/rocky bank. Lots of small biting flies but few mosquitoes. At the Coe River crossing, a more manageable wade crossing can be found by bushwacking up about 50 feet from the trail to where it calms a bit.

Don't miss going up to the Cloud Cap Inn if you camp at Cloud Cap (and watch the sunset from there)!
Water crossings are entirely dependent on time of day at this time of year. Reports from the evening before were totally different the next morning due to the melt and high temperatures.

I'd argue that anyone not experienced with snow travel should carry microspikes still for the snow, with the heat it was slick even with good trail runners and I was grateful on a few of the snow fields to have my spikes. Went CCW.
Go counterclockwise
Poles and breathable shoes are needed.
The log bridge on Eliot was great! I would have really struggled with that crossing without it.

We also did the detour around the washout, which added elevation to the trip. We don't regret it, but it was a bummer to miss a scenic part of the trail.
There are 4 log tied together at Elliot crossing
Clean up Yocum ridge
Epic
Blowdowns suck.
We trail ran it in 2 days, camping at white river sno park in my van. Very doable in 2 days, especially without the heavy packs!
Highly recommend CCW from Lodge for trail runners especially. Feels mostly downhill with manageable climbs throughout, and a final climb on packed dirt back to the Lodge (vs finishing with a sandy ascent).
I took the Timberline Trail at Yokum Ridge despite some people saying it was washed out and had too many blowdowns and found it to be a wonderful section of trail, no issues with the blowdowns at all and all washouts had been corrected (for now).
First hike. Was tougher than expected but made it just fine

Everything was amazing. I loved sunset at cairn basin
Too many people now.
Great trail
The section after Cloud Cap was really the only area where we felt like we needed to carry more than a liter of water. There was so much water everywhere else, and water is heavy!
First backpacking hike and was the hardest hike!
Loved the rope at eliot, VERY helpful
It's tiring and tough. Lots of climbing and sketchy river crossings.
Very pleased with the Elevation Changes Map. Plus great night time reading on the back.
This was perhaps my 15th time or so going around. Unfortunate to see poor human waste management around most camps, visible TP coming out from under rocks or bark and occasional surface poops. Other than that it was a great time as always, wild flowers off the hook and huckleberries a few thimble berries and a little grouse wortle berry on the slopes leading down to white river.
We felt very prepared in case we had needed to camp; we had a space blanket, first aid kit, extra clothes, food, and electrolytes. Our only issue was that we took longer than expected after getting lost crossing the white river and finding safer places to cross the rivers, and we had no cell service to inform our families, so I would recommend a satellite phone or better communication plan than we had, otherwise, it was a wonderful experience running/hiking it in a day.
Poles are a must.
All the wildflowers in mid August are amazing.
You won’t be alone on the trail.
You might want to add an option about crossing creeks on snow bridges, not just logs or wade. Because of an avalanche there has been a snow bridge on Clark Creek all season. It's melting fast and won't be safe for long. I crossed on it even though it made me pretty nervous. I left Clark Creek answer blank
Great trail, great experience, slightly more technical than I expected but I like that. And that hiker shower back at Timberline at the end was fantastic. Thanks to whomever provides that.
Wished people took more time to bury their TP
Trail was well marked. Excellent trail maintenance.

The area directly behind my campsite at Elk Cove was covered in toilet paper, wipes and even a dehydrated meal bag.
I also had to ask someone to put out a campfire. Seems like there needs to be more signage about campfire bans
Absolutely amazing! Only thing I would do differently is take more days so I could take my time. Maybe 5 or 6 nights.
Spouse with me 67yo. Great experience, loved it. Tougher than expected but we're fit ultra runners.
Eliot was an easy log cross, but the descent/ascent to the riverbed was ROUGH! Newton would have been an easy log cross, but i started so early that the log was covered in ice.
Go with a positive attitude and remember why you are there
Note: there is a rope being used to climb in/out of the ravine @ Elliot. After we got to the top, we noticed it was dangerously fraying and about to snap. We opted to cut the rope so that an unsuspecting hiker wouldn’t rely on it. We spoke to other hikers later in the day and heard it had been repaired. This rope should be carefully inspected before use. The ravine is steep and close to rushing water. Any misstep could be devastating. Check the knot under the tree it’s attached to and also the portion that rubs on the rock during use.
White River crossing points could be more clearly marked.
Fun! Loved the challenge. Smoky haze sucked and lots of day hikers/trail runners on trail.
Great trail, first time doing it. Definitely thought some river crossings were more than we expected after reading some recent All Trails reviews.
Great trail, early morning river crossing are the easiest. So many nice people hiking !
Always fun to see. Perhaps further advise folks that Eagle Cap charging $20 per spot for use of spigot and wc!
It was great and very well maintained. Looking forward to the day when the blow section is back to normal.
Elliot Crossing was VASTLY better than last year (thanks maintainers) and the trail overall was in great shape.
Less timber/forest, more sand high desert than I expected.
Beautiful. Elevation wasn’t as bad as I had thought it would be
Pack light. The trail has a lot of steepnelevation changes.
Don’t rely on AllTrails map download. I downloaded it but didn’t work without having connection and I took few wrong turns and walked extra. 8miles (total 49mi)
Best backpacking trip of my life!!
2nd time CCW (of 3 trips: 2017, 2020, 2024) and still love doing White River first and Zig Zag last!
Beautiful views. Slipped into strapped sandals for wading. Would carry 1.5 liters of water and refill often.
The trail perse is not complicated. Easy to navigate and to hike. Carrying the backup turns this however into a different game. Lots of noise regarding Elliot crossing but this was easy compared to others. The rope to hike down/up was a bliss. Made it even fun.
I wish there was a way to describe the crossings as shoes on or off.
I picked up 2.5 oz of trash along the route. Mostly little easily/accidentally dropped things like part of a wrapper or a broken rubber o-ring, but also one rusted steel tent stake. Saw more toilet paper than I’d like to but wasn’t equipped to pick that up…
What a beautiful, well-maintained trail. I have also done Loowit and Adams RTM and this was so much more pleasant.
Best campsite along the trail is the cowboy ledge above McNeil point!
Late season trail conditions were very good. It's very helpful to have all the cairns, bootpaths, and log placements across streams, etc., and these are typically not in place at the start of the season (early July)
Great trail
Car camped the one night at Meadows by shuttling a car. No need to carry heavy packs
